ROANOKE, VA

Roanoke, VA is about fifty miles north of my collecting area; however, from time to time I will pick up an interesting bottle or two from there. Two of which you will see listed below. There is actually a connection between Roanoke and Johnson City, TN in the personage of Lawrence L. Rice who owned Rice's Bottling Works in Roanoke, and would later start a sister company in Johnson City. Later he would wind up taking over the Pepsi-Cola bottling plant of Johnson City as well.

Roanoke, VA was the location of the Columbia Chemical Corporation which was the company that created the 3-C Nectar brand in late 1920. According to an article in the Clinch Valley News, a M. J. Hankins of Tazewell was elected Treasurer and General Manager of the company in September of 1920. Strangely enough there is a Hankins from North Tazewell who would wind up operating the 3-C Nectar plant in Graham, VA in 1923. If you would like to read more about the brand check out the 3-C Nectar Story
